  1. Vertebrate, any animal having a backbone or
  2. spinal column. The five classes of
  3. vertebrates are FISH, AMPHIBIAN, REPTILE,
  4. BIRD and MAMMAL.
  5. Vertebrates are comparatively large, have a
  6. high degree of specialization of their parts,
  7. and are bilaterally symetrical. All have an
  8. interior skeleton, a brain enclosed in a
  9. cranium, a closed circulatory system, and a
  10. heart divided into two, three, or four
  11. chambers; most have two pairs of appendages
  12. modified as fins, limbs or wings in the
  13. different classes. Animals without backbones
  14. are called Invertebrates, these include
  15. worms, and sponges.
